This eight-species project needs a sunny berry bed, an open shrub boundary and a cool woodland edge. Serviceberry can reach 4–8 m high and chokeberry can spread 2.5–4 m; give both their own mature spaces outside the low fruiting patches. The two woodland groundcovers are included for habitat and flowers, not as harvest crops. Bunchberry is difficult to establish and unsuitable for hot summers, so the full selection belongs on a site that can meet that condition.

Highbush blueberries need acid soil and crop best in sun. RHS recommends pH 4.5–5.5 and sufficient water during active growth.

Where it fits Keep this bed beyond the future shade of the large shrubs. Allow 1–2 m between bushes according to cultivar size and preserve access for picking.

Bilberry is a low, suckering fruit shrub for acidic soil in sun or partial shade. It adds a different habit and harvest to the blueberry planting.

Where it fits Give it a reachable patch along the lightly shaded edge, with space to spread. Keep it separate from the taller huckleberry and young blueberry roots.

Lingonberry is an evergreen fruiting shrub suited to moist, draining acid soil in partial shade, including woodland edges.

Where it fits Reserve a separate low patch beside the picking path with room for its spreading branches. Protect its moisture supply and check local frost exposure.

Black huckleberry grows in acid soil in sun or partial shade, produces edible berries and provides flowers for pollinators. It can form thickets.

Where it fits Use the brighter, freely draining shoulder of this area, with its own roughly 1.2–1.5 m-wide footprint. Keep its spreading shallow roots away from smaller patches.

Black chokeberry shares the acidic, moist, draining conditions and tolerates partial shade. Its berries are edible but very astringent when raw.

Where it fits Reserve a broad space outside the blueberry bed, allowing 2.5–4 m of mature spread. Manage suckers before they enter the low fruiting patches.

Serviceberry grows on acid-to-neutral soil in sun or partial shade, with spring flowers and edible dark berries. It becomes a large shrub or small tree.

Where it fits Place towards the northern boundary where the mature crown leaves blueberries sunny. Confirm its expected dimensions: RHS lists 4–8 m high and 2.5–4 m wide.

Bunchberry provides a low woodland layer with conspicuous flower bracts and fruit for wildlife. It needs cool conditions and can be difficult to establish.

Where it fits Try a small patch in cool dappled shade with humus-rich, moist, draining acid soil. Keep it out of paths and away from plants that would smother it.

Wintergreen forms a low evergreen carpet in acidic woodland soil with good drainage. Its red fruits provide food for birds and small animals.

Where it fits Use its own shaded patch beside, rather than mixed through, the bunchberry. This guide includes it for habitat and ornamental cover, not for kitchen harvesting.

03 / Give plants their place

Suggested layout

  1. Draw the future serviceberry crown and the chokeberry footprint first, then position the sunny blueberry bed beyond their shade and strongest root competition.

  2. Leave 1–2 m between blueberries according to cultivar. Add a clear path before setting out the low berry patches; lingonberry, bilberry and huckleberry need separate boundaries.

  3. Put huckleberry on freely draining ground and reserve the cool shaded edge for the two habitat groundcovers. Moist woodland soil should still drain freely; this is not a bog-garden design.

  4. If the garden soil is unsuitable, blueberries can grow in large containers of peat-free ericaceous compost. That does not provide enough room or the right setting for this entire eight-species project.

04 / Put your plan into practice

Getting started

  1. Test soil in each proposed planting area before buying plants. Confirm the blueberry pH requirement and assess drainage, summer moisture and the hottest part of the site.

  2. Check the mature sizes of the supplied serviceberry and chokeberry. Set their positions, access paths and water supply before planting the smaller fruiting layers.

  3. Select locally suitable blueberry cultivars. Different compatible blueberry cultivars can improve cropping; bilberry, lingonberry and the unrelated berry shrubs do not replace blueberry pollination partners.

  4. Plant the woody framework first and keep its bases accessible during establishment. Add small low-berry patches and label their boundaries so spreading growth can be managed.

  5. Trial the bunchberry and wintergreen in their separate woodland patches once the soil and shade are suitable. Expand only when they establish successfully in your local summer conditions.

05 / Help it establish

Care and harvest

  • Keep the blueberry soil moist through dry spells and use rainwater where tap water is alkaline. Avoid waterlogging and inspect container drainage if using ericaceous pots.
  • Follow the blueberry guide for feeding and mulch. Avoid lime, mushroom compost and other additions that raise pH in the acid-loving beds.
  • Maintain light around blueberry crowns as the serviceberry grows. Check the boundaries of suckering shrubs and low berry patches so neighbouring plants retain room.
  • Keep foot traffic off the woodland groundcovers. Bunchberry can struggle in heat even where winter hardiness is sufficient; shade alone cannot compensate for an unsuitable climate.
  • Treat bunchberry and wintergreen as habitat plants in this design and leave their fruits for wildlife.
