Description
The unripe fruits of this plant are juicy and refreshing, with a slightly sour taste that is appreciated by many. However, some people find that there are too many seeds in relation to the flesh. The fruit juice is widely used in soups, sauces, jellies, ice creams, pastries, and other dishes. Nutritionally, the fruit contains approximately 1.5% protein, 1.6% fat, 16.8% carbohydrates, and 0.6% ash. In the Himalayas, an average annual yield of 32 kg per tree has been recorded. The fruits have a diameter of about 12 cm. The seeds are soft when fresh and can be eaten raw, while dried seeds are used as a seasoning in dishes such as dal, fried samosas, fillings, and chutneys. Some sources even mention that the cooked leaves are consumed.
